One of my favorite things about taking a trip is the planning stage. I always do an extensive amount of planning. But sometimes figuring out where to go can be daunting. Finding someplace interesting and fun that fits within my budget can be an adventure in its self. But what if you didn’t have to make that decision. What if you didn’t even have to do any of the planning. Someone just told you, you’re going on vacation and we’ve made all the arrangements, have a great time? Well that can happen, they are called mystery trips.
How it Works
You contact a mystery trip company and fill out one of their extensive questionnaires that covers what your budget is, desired travel dates, your travel experience, likes and dislikes, as well as other topics.
One week before your departure date you will receive a projected weather report which will help you know what type of clothing to pack. A few days before your travel day you will receive a package with your destination and travel documents in it. You are encouraged not to open it until that last minute possible, so you will be flying to your destination, you will be told when to go to the airport and once there open the envelope. Your package will include a suggested itinerary as well as plenty of information about your destination including restaurants, sightseeing, and shopping.
Some mystery trip companies offer only domestic trips while others offer both domestic and international. You can also use your air miles, though air miles tickets may limit your options since they will have to choose a destination and date that is available with your air miles program. Companies try to stay away from the “usual” destinations and instead find interesting, new places to explore.
One couple decided to take a mystery trip for their honeymoon. With all the stress and amount of time they were putting into the planning of their wedding, the thought of planning a honeymoon as well was overwhelming, so they decided to take the plunge and let their honeymoon be a surprise.
They put up a large map at their wedding and had guests put a mark on the map where they thought their mystery honeymoon would be. Later they framed the map and kept it as a souvenir of their trip. The couple was very excited when they opened their envelope at the airport and found out they were going to Peru.

Pack Up & Go
This company offers 3-day weekend getaways. Destinations will be no more than 3 to 4 hours away from you. The company recommends a budget of $650 to $850 per person however the higher your budget the more options they will have for you. A budget of $1000 per person will afford you a luxury, high-end getaway, however, they can work with whatever budget you have. How you travel to your destination depends on your budget. They do not allow the use of frequent flyer miles or hotel points.
