Jubilee for Jane-ites
In honor of Jane Austen’s 200th anniversary of her death, a number of special events and exhibitions will be held throughout Hampshire. See a list of events at janeausten200.co.uk
Some of the events will include:
The Jane Austen Tour and Tea – Runs through the beginning of November. Guests will visit the Cathedral where Jane is buried. They will get more insight to her life and connections she had in Hampshire. After the tour guests will enjoy tea or coffee and cake.
Retail and Romance: Jane Goes to the Ball – Runs through the beginning of October. Jane was very familiar with the town of Basingstoke and attended dances there. She wrote about the world around her so it makes you wonder if she took inspiration from attending these dances to describe the balls in her books.
Jane Austen’s House Museum – Where guests can see items belonging to Jane and associated to her. www.jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk
Chawton House Library – Chawton House is just a short walk from Jane Austen’s house. She referred to it as the great house and was owned by her brother. There is a reading alcove where it is said Jane liked to sit. Guests can also see the dining table where Jane dined with her brothers and sisters. chawtonhouse.org
