Beginning in late February the TSA quietly implemented changes to the way they do their pat downs in airport security lines. In the past it was up to the screener how rigorously they would preform their pat down based on their own assessment of the passenger. However, after an alarming number of weapons were getting through the screening process undetected the TSA decided to make changes to how they do their pat downs.
The new rules now require that all pat downs be performed at the highest porcedutal level. What does this mean for travelers? For those who are choosen for pat downs they should expect to be touched in more intimate places and more firmly by screeners, regardless of age, gender or race. TSA agents can now use the palm of their hands instead of just the back of the hand.
Pat downs will be performed by same gender screeners. Travelers can request to have the pat down done in private or to have a companion present to witness the procedure.
